Let’s have a 50-cent public transport fare trial

With petrol prices sky-rocketing and the cost of living crisis biting hard, now is the time to introduce a 50-cent public transport fare trial in NSW.

EcoTransit Sydney’s campaign is for the NSW government to commit to a 50-cent public transport fare trial across the Opal network administered by Transport for NSW.

The trial would apply to services using the Opal card system, including trains, metro, buses, ferries, and light rail.

This proposal would provide immediate cost-of-living relief for households facing rising transport expenses, particularly as global instability and conflict in the Middle East continues to push petrol prices higher.

A flat 50-cent fare would give commuters a reliable and affordable alternative to driving, helping workers, students and families reduce weekly travel costs while encouraging greater use of public transport.

Evidence from the Queensland 50-cent fare trial shows that dramatically lower fares can significantly increase public transport use. During the six-month trial, patronage increased by more than 18% and commuters saved over $181 million in travel costs.

A similar trial in NSW would help lower household fuel spending and reduce congestion.
