Right now, thousands of people are sitting in traffic in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs — while trains speed underneath an empty, half-built station that was abandoned nearly 50 years ago. That station is Woollahra, and it’s time we asked the question: why hasn’t it been finished?
It’s not because it’s too hard. It’s not because it’s too expensive. And it’s definitely not because it’s not needed. The station box already exists, sitting between two of the busiest suburban stations in Sydney: Bondi Junction and Edgecliff. What’s missing is the political will to finish the job — and the public pressure to demand it.
Overcrowded Stations. Congested Streets. A Simple Fix.
Let’s be blunt. Bondi Junction is bursting. Over 34,000 daily users, queues for lifts, packed platforms, jammed bus interchanges. Edgecliff isn’t far behind, with more than 11,000 passengers a day and growing. And between them? Nothing. Just a 2.5 km gap with no station, no access, no relief for the growing population in between.
Meanwhile, roads like Ocean Street, Edgecliff Road and Oxford Street are gridlocked with locals driving short distances to access public transport they should’ve had on their doorstep decades ago. Woollahra Station won’t just improve the network — it will directly reduce traffic, noise, and pollution in the heart of Sydney’s east.
New Digital Signalling Removes the Last Excuse
Here’s the kicker: the T4 Eastern Suburbs Line is now getting cutting-edge digital signalling — ETCS Level 2. That means trains can safely run closer together, increasing capacity and reducing timetable gaps. More flexibility. More frequency. And yes — room for an extra stop like Woollahra without compromising performance.
So the old arguments — “it will slow the line”, “it’ll disrupt timetables” — no longer stack up. If anything, this is the perfect time to finally activate Woollahra Station, with a smarter, more dynamic rail network backing it up.
Locals Deserve Better — And They Know It
Woollahra residents aren’t asking for a miracle. They’re asking for a station that was promised, planned, and half-built. For many, the nearest rail option is a 15–20 minute walk or a short but frustrating drive to Edgecliff or Bondi Junction. That means crowded parking, slow buses, and unnecessary car trips — in a suburb that should be one of the most rail-accessible in the city.
Imagine the difference: a 5-minute walk to the platform. A 7-minute train to the city. No car, no parking hassle, no waiting in bus queues. Students, older residents, workers, parents — everyone wins.
And the idea that Woollahra can’t “handle” a station is laughable. The community is more climate-aware, more mobile, and more supportive of sustainable transport than ever. We’re not living in 1976 anymore. We need to stop pretending we are.

The NSW Government Must Act — Now
There is zero excuse for delay. This is shovel-ready infrastructure with enormous public benefit. It’s cost-effective, environmentally sound, and backed by every policy the NSW Government claims to support — mode shift, emissions reduction, sustainable urban planning, and efficient use of assets.
Instead of throwing billions at more toll roads, the government could finish Woollahra Station for a fraction of the cost and deliver a project that ticks every box: public good, climate action, network resilience, and transport equity.
And with the digital signalling rollout already happening on the T4 Line, there will never be a better time. The network is being modernised. The capacity is growing. The opportunity is real — but the window won’t stay open forever.
No More Excuses. No More Delays. Finish Woollahra Station.
This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about common sense. We have an existing station cavity, a high-demand corridor, a growing local population, and upgraded signalling that makes it all possible. Leaving Woollahra Station unfinished in 2025 is not just a missed opportunity — it’s a deliberate failure to act in the public interest.
Let’s get this done. Let’s reduce car dependence. Let’s take pressure off overcrowded hubs. Let’s finish the station, and finally give Woollahra the rail access it has always needed — and deserved.
