West of Bankstown – the forgotten commuters

Key Issues

  • Up to 450 metre walk between Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro platforms (impacting on travel times)
  • 2 Ticket barriers separate Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro platforms (and possibly multi-modal fares)
  • No roof coverage between Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro platforms (impacting on commuter experience)

Future West of Bankstown Train Services

Transport for NSW has announced a partial restoration of direct trains to City Circle via Regents Park/Lidcombe in 2024. Liverpool (and Bankstown) to City via Regents Park (former Inner West Line) was removed in 2013 by Gladys Berejiklian.

The “Bankstown to City Circle via Regents Park” service will NOT be restored. Trains will terminate at Lidcombe instead of continuing to Inner West and City Circle via Strathfield.

Key Issues

  • Birrong and Yagoona will have no direct trains to Central (because of failure to restore the Bankstown to City via Regents Park/Lidcombe service on the Inner West Line)
  • Direct Liverpool to Bankstown trains removed (forcing interchange at Regents Park without additional infrastructure)
  • Low frequency of train services for West of Bankstown and no community consultation for timetable development
  • Chatswood to City will have 35 services (20 trains + 15 metro) per hour but Birrong & Yagoona will have 0 trains to City.
  • North Shore commuters have a cross platform interchange at Chatswood, but West of Bankstown commuters have to walk up to 450m between train and Metro regardless of the rain, hail, or shine.
  • Chatswood is in the Premier Berejiklian’s electorate, but Birrong/Yagoona is in Western Sydney (and soon to be in the marginal Labor seat of Auburn)
