Prioritise Sydney Trains Investment for Western Sydney Airport

EcoTransit has launched a new ActionNetwork letter writing campaign calling for the extension of the South West Rail Link to Western Sydney Airport Terminal.

Write your letter to NSW Transport Minister John Graham at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/extend-sydney-trains-network-to-western-sydney-airport-terminal-station/

Dear NSW Transport Minister John Graham,

I am writing to urge the Commonwealth and NSW Governments to prioritise the extension of the Sydney Trains network to Western Sydney Airport by extending the South West Rail Link (Leppington Line) directly to the Western Sydney Airport International Terminal Station.

This extension must be treated as a crucial investment for the future of the region. The extension of Sydney Trains to Western Sydney Airport will deliver immediate and long-term benefits, including enhanced connectivity, reduced congestion, and a sustainable transport solution.

A direct rail link to the airport is essential for easing travel times and providing efficient access for passengers, workers, and businesses. It is essential that the rail network be built with the capacity to meet future demand. This requires new tunnelling and wider station boxes capable of accommodating double-deck, 8-carriage Sydney Trains.

The current design for Bradfield/Aerotropolis is based on 3-carriage metro trains, which are incompatible with the 8-carriage Sydney Trains, making it impossible to serve the growing needs of Western Sydney with the current infrastructure plans (including the failure to have direct Western Sydney Airport connections from South West Sydney and Sydney Airport, without having to change between a train and metro with luggage).

Furthermore, Bradfield/Aerotropolis is not the same as Western Sydney Airport, and the airport requires direct, heavy-rail access now. Delaying this infrastructure or relying on incompatible metro solutions would severely limit the success of the airport and the surrounding region’s development.

EcoTransit has been advocating for the extension of Sydney Trains beyond Bradfield/Aerotropolis to directly serve Western Sydney Airport, highlighting the need for robust, sustainable rail infrastructure to support the rapid growth of the region.

I stand in full support of their efforts and urge both the NSW and Commonwealth Governments to listen to these calls for action and commit to the Sydney Trains extension.

We strongly urge the NSW and Commonwealth Governments to make the Sydney Trains extension to Western Sydney Airport a priority, ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is in place to support the region’s future growth and economic potential.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

Sincerely,

EcoTransit Sydney
